Iron Railing: Stair Rails, Cast Iron And Wrought Iron

For thousands of years, iron has been shaped for weaponry, building, cookware, and art. Soon, iron welders joined two of these functions together; the advent of iron railing made iron not just a structure used in building, but also a piece of art.
Iron railing is extremely useful and it comes in a variety of forms. Utilized as a guard rail, iron railing proves to be effective functionally as well as decoratively. Also, the two main types of iron used, wrought iron and cast iron, render iron railing aesthetically appealing. Considering iron railing's dual purposes, it's understandable that interior railing made of iron is used so frequently. Whether inside or outside, iron railing can be a celebrated structural piece for a building.
Wrought iron is a widely popular iron material that has been used for centuries. It's used as stair rails and guard rails for many architectural designs. The sight of wrought iron in New Orleans, for example, is inescapable. On the streets of the French Quarter, wrap-around balconies made of wrought iron railings are on most of the buildings, which have French and Spanish styles of architecture. Wrought iron railing not only adds to the French colonial charm of New Orleans, but also provides safety for Mardi Gras onlookers throwing beads from balconies.
Another way that wrought iron is used is as stair rails. In Northeastern cities such as New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore wrought iron stair rails are used heavily on entryway staircases of those cities' many row houses. Used as stair rails, wrought iron proves its functionality again as an effective safety measure and a visually appealing piece. There is another type of iron used as railing, however.
Cast iron railing is another type of interior railing. Often, this particular type of iron is used to make exterior fences. Many of the same row houses and brownstones of the Northeast use cast iron railing for small fenced-in areas in front of their house. Cast iron can also be used as interior railing as well. Despite its being more brittle than wrought iron, many have shaped cast iron into dazzling displays as their stair rails.
Both cast iron and wrought iron show the duality of iron as exterior and interior railing. A refined addition to any home inside or outside, it's clear that iron railing goes the extra mile to be functional and decorative at the same time. Truly, iron railing is timeless and this could be why it has been so stylish for hundreds of years.
